College students across the United States continue to be targeted in common phishing scams. Scammers are advertising everything from phony job opportunities to fake password resets to students via emails sent to their school accounts (i.e. [email protected] email accounts). For students “employment” has resulted in financial loss and “password resets” could lead to identity theft (remember your registration and canvas are tied to your @live.longwood.edu email account). Here is a recent FBI PSA about the most recent employment scams and below are some other phishing indicators to look for when checking your email.
Slow Down:
- check the address and greeting
- look for mistakes
- hover on that link
Be Thoughtful about your actions:
- *required* urgency is usually bad
- friends/family/colleagues can be victims too
Lastly, when in doubt, ask ITS.
